Kaas Plateau: Maharashtra's Valley of Flowers in Satara.

Introduction.

Greetings, nature lovers! If you are seeking an adventure that involves trekking hills, full of colours with a huge variety of flowers and fauna, then the Kaas Plateau is your backstage pass to Mother Nature’s grand floral fashion show. Strap in for a journey that is as breathtaking as it is amusing.

Where is this Heaven?

Kaas Plateau, which is also known as Kaas Pathar (which means Kaas Plateau in the local Marathi language in Maharashtra), is a plateau located on the Western Ghats of Maharashtra up to down south in India. Kaas Plateau is approx. 40 km from the city of Satara, approx. 278 km from Mumbai and approx. 135 km from Pune City.

The Kaas Plateau is known for its diverse Flora and fauna with a very fragile ecosystem. You will find approx. 850 varieties and species of flower plants, grown in this fragile ecosystem, can only be found here in Kaas Pathar, Satara, Maharashtra. Some of these plants/flowers are so unique that they are only found here in the entire world.

The Kaas Plateau is spread around 1,000 hectares in total size area and is located at a height of 1200 m. It is called “Kaas Pathar” because the word “Kaas” derives from the Kaasa tree which is found here. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations included in Satara packages for tourists.

What is the best time to visit Kaas Plateau?

The best time to visit Kaas Plateau is during the monsoon season, from August to October. During this time, the plateau is transformed into a carpet of flowers of all colours and shapes. The flowers bloom in abundance and the air is filled with their fragrance.

Kaas Plateau is a very famous tourist destination, especially during the monsoon season which attracts a huge crowd, especially from Mumbai and Pune. Since this plateau is a fragile ecosystem therefore is very important for visitors to respect this environment. Visitors are not allowed to pluck any flowers or trample on the vegetation system.

The best season to visit Kas Pathar is from August to October but many nature lovers love to visit Kaas during the rains; still, the Plants bloom to their full natural form are during late August to September.

How was this Paradise formed?

The Kaas Plateau was formed by volcanic activities and is covered with thin soil cover, as a result, no vegetation grows in this area. This area comes under a very high rainfall area. Due to this, the flora and fauna of this region are quite unique.

These unique ecological features make Kaas Pathar one of the biodiversity hotspots. The Kaas Plateau is known for its different biosphere, high mountain plateau and green land covered. During the thunderstorm season, especially in the month of August, the Kaas Pathar comes alive with a beautiful variety of flowers. There are as many as 850 nos of different species/varieties of flowering plants grown in this area, of which 624 are so rare that they are listed on the IUCN Red List. These rare flowers include orchids, shrubs like karvi and rapacious shops like Drosera indica.

What are the other surrounding places to visit near Kaas Pathar?

The Kaas Plateau is just close to the dense evergreen forests of the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary which helps the sanctuary as the catchment area for the Koyna Dam. This Sanctuary is also a paradise for bird lovers since there are many species of birds which can be seen here. There is also a very wonderful lake called Kaas Lake, which is located near the south of the Kaas plateau.

Kaas Plateau attracts many tourists, scientists, and nature lovers. The government has limited the number of visitors to 2,000 per day to control potential damage from excessive tourism. Walking among the flowers spread on the plateau is a wonderful experience.

Who is the Rockstar of this Show?

Now let’s talk about the rockstars of this paradise – the flowers. The Kaas Plateau is home to some rare and endemic species, making it a botanical wonderland. The most vibrant flowers that can be seen on the Kaas Plateau include:

  • Karvi (Carissa spinarum), is a white flower with a sweet fragrance.
  • Kurud (Ceropegia bulbosa), a purple flower that resembles a pitcher
  • Shimpi (Smithia hirsuta), a yellow flower that grows in clusters
  • Utkatamba (Utricularia aurea), a small yellow flower that grows in water
  • Karvande (Carissa carandas), a white flower with a purple center

Conclusion

As you pass through the plateau, you may find yourself literally walking in the clouds. The entire area is covered in mist like a dreamy veil, adding a touch of mystery to the already enchanting landscape. It is a scene straight out of a romantic movie, with you being the hero in this floral love story.

Remember that the plateau is home to many rare, endangered and threatened, unique plant species that are found nowhere else in the world except in this place. It is our responsibility to keep them safe and save them from extinction.

If we take care of the plateau and enjoy the beauty without damaging it, it will remain for us to enjoy for years to come as well as for the next generations. It is a well-known World Heritage Site that the international community recognizes as a special location. For us as a nation to harm it would be improper.

Instead of placing all the burden of responsibility on the government, let us take some charge ourselves and help to preserve this beautiful nature.
