Kanheri Caves: 2000-year old Ancient Treasures hidden in the forest of Mumbai.

Introduction:

Welcome to the bustling city of Mumbai, where skyscrapers touch the heavens and the fast-paced life never seems to slow down. Amidst this urban jungle lies a historical gem that often gets overlooked – the Kanheri Caves, which is situated inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali East, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. This intriguing site takes you on a journey through time, offering a glimpse into ancient Buddhist architecture, art, and spirituality. So do join us as we explore the mystical world of the Kanheri Caves.

A Glimpse into History:

The Kanheri Caves, tucked away in the heart of the deep forest inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park reserve forest area, hold secrets that date back to the 1st century BC. Yes, you read that right – we are talking about over 2,000 years of history! These caves served as a vibrant Buddhist center and monastic complex where monks once lived, studied, and meditated.

The Cave Complex:

Picture this: A sprawling complex with over 109 caves carved out of the rocky hills. As you explore, you will discover caves of varying sizes, each serving a different purpose. From the grand Chaityas (prayer halls) to the cosy Viharas (monk’s cells), it’s like a real estate market for ancient monks spread in a wide area in this deep forest of Mumbai.

The Marvel of Rock-cut Architecture:

The caves are not just historical; they are architectural wonders. The artisans of yore used chisels, hammers, and sheer determination to carve intricate sculptures, inscriptions, and pillars right out of the rock. It is like ancient Mumbai’s version of a home makeover show – but with a lot more stone. The most amazing thing that you can also see is there are some caves carved in just one large stone on the mountain.

The Art and Iconography:

You will be amazed by the artistry on display. The walls of the Kanheri Caves are adorned with sculptures and carvings that depict scenes from the life of Buddha, Bodhisattvas, and various deities. It’s like a 2,000-year-old graphic novel etched in stone. There is a painting which is almost 2000 years old on the ceiling of Caves No. 41 which is really mind blogging since you can imagine how difficult it would be to draw on the celling at those times.

The Spirituality:

The air in Kanheri is thick with a sense of serenity and spirituality. As you enter the dimly lit Chaityas, you can almost hear the echoes of ancient chants and meditative prayers. It’s a place where time seems to stand still, and you can’t help but feel a deep sense of introspection. The Chaityas Hall which is in the Cave No 3, has a very different positive vibration which will inspire you to sit silently & mediate for some time.
